Happy New Year and welcome the smells of a new season. Beginning a new year ushers in a new smell to mark the holiday. Today it is the familiar smell of black-eyed peas and collard greens simmering on the stove early this morning. In keeping with southern tradition, this afternoon we will add the smells of marinated pork loin and some cornbread in the iron skillet to fill the house.
The smells of season are accentuated throughout the fall beginning with pumpkins in October, roasted turkey in November and cinnamon spices mulling in the wintry month of December. I suspect just as I mention these items, your sense of smell takes you right back to each of those seasons.
New year, new day, new smell. We see the seasons change, we hear the holiday greetings, today I encourage you to enjoy the fresh aroma of a fragrant new year. 2015 is already smelling good. The best is yet to come.
